Event Details

A curated walk around Bloomsbury, led by scientists, in which we will explore how different types of urban spaces might affect the way in which we breathe, and thus their impact on our overall health and wellbeing.

When measuring the quality of an urban space, we often forget its impact on one of the most fundamental acts of life: our ability to breathe. While we are often concerned with the quality of the air around us, we often forget about the quality of our own breathing: how fast or slow, or how deep or shallow, we might inhale and exhale. Yet how we breathe is directly related to our nervous systems and how well we feel, both physically and psychologically.

In this workshop, visitors will walk through Bloomsbury and pay particular attention to how we breathe in different types of urban spaces. In addition to the quality of the air itself, we will explore how factors such as the level of activity, density, speed, noise, smell, temperature or humidity of these spaces might affect our breathing. We will share our experiences and discuss how our breath can be used as a qualifier of an urban space and its impact on our health and well-being.

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the relationship between their bodies and their urban environments and, in particular, with Bloomsbury.
