Bloomsbury had been long associated with centres of academic excellence, the advancement of knowledge, and its peerless museums. Although they were not contemporaries, Sir John Soane and Sir Hans Sloane both straddled what has become known as the age of Enlightenment, endowing London with the eclectic trophies of their shared passion for travel, discovery and collecting. The results are one of the most idiosyncratic and endearing of the city’s smaller museums and one of the greatest and most imposing collections in the world, housed within the venerable walls of the British Museum.

Between these two iconic buildings we will explore other institutions and people who have illuminated and expanded the field of human knowledge and their sometimes surprising legacies, including a preserved body! Along the way we drop in to a more contemporary establishment which is rooted in Britain’s colonial past & seeking to shed a new light on some of our assumptions about this fascinating period of history that entertained both slavery and new freedoms in thought and morality.
