Event Details

Researchers at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital have examined the links between ambient air pollution and the occurrence of two eye diseases: age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma. The studies were carried out using data from the UK Biobank, which holds detailed, long-term health information about hundreds of thousands of volunteers from across the UK. The researchers found an association between people living in areas with high levels of fine particulate matter and the development of both AMD and glaucoma, which are among the leading causes of sight loss in the developed world.

In this talk, we discuss the science that could explain these findings and the implications for public health.

This event takes place in Beveridge Hall at Senate House.
