‘A Journey Through Ciudades’ celebrates cultures across the world through interspersed clarinet, saxophone, string and vocal quartet music.

‘A Journey Through Ciudades’ is a programme full of cultural excitement, variety and celebration. The main focus of the programme is Guillermo Lago’s Ciudades. Starting with Sarajevo, we hear the symbolic religious undertones through the bells of Islamic and Orthodox Christian prayer – a nod to the beauty of these religions living alongside each other. In Tokyo, the bustling excitement of the city is portrayed through rhythmic complexity and vigour. In Köln, a sombre culture is described, whereas Córdoba is showcased through feisty harmonies. This is followed by Montevideo and Addis Ababa which create an explosive end. Within this celebration of cultures, we have interspersed our own creations and interpretations of cultures across the world.

After our first set of Ciudades we have Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2, the third movement. It is a glorious ode to love and presents an incredible Russian richness that showcases the country’s passionate heritage. We also present Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 3, fourth movement, our own interpretation of Germany. Goodnight Dear Heart is an elergy mourning the loss of children close to the both the composer and the lyricist, poet Mark Twain. It is a story of loss, showing grief and love with no borders.
