Can I get there?
I swim out towards this island every day
It’s way too far for me to ever make it
Not getting there is fine
Trying to matters more
Rangitoto came out of the sea 600 years ago
I dived in more recently
The first few strokes take your breath away
I have learned not to panic
One stroke at a time
One breath at a time
I always end up going
Much further than I think I can
Rangitoto arose from deep within, as does each poem. I was born in the very centre of England, but only ever felt at home by the sea. Now I live in New Zealand, surrounded by ocean.
