Event Details
Echo is a newly commissioned public sculpture by artist Joe Duggan, commissioned by the Commissioners of Russell Square.
This monumental artwork stands 4 metres tall in Russell Square Gardens, resembling hastily erected metal scaffolding with a concrete boulder precariously balanced on top, seemingly defying gravity’s force. Duggan employs the apparent simplicity and seeming absurdity of this work to generate inherent tension, inviting physical and emotional engagement while encouraging contemplation. Echo prompts viewers to reflect on their relationship with their surroundings and on unnoticed yet impactful forces.
Inspired by the rich heritage of Russell Square Gardens, the British Museum’s collection, and Camden’s Irish community, Echo weaves cultural narratives into its form. Duggan’s use of reclaimed materials underscores his commitment to sustainability, challenging traditional sculpture norms. Echo sparks discussions on the transient nature of human ideologies, using natural forces as symbolic representations. Through explorations of time and impermanence, viewers can contemplate the finite lifespan of societal beliefs and the enduring themes of change and evolution.
