Event Details
This exhibition foregrounds Senate House Library’s 20th and 21st-century Caribbean collections, with a particular focus on two parallel narratives: the movements towards independence and decolonisation in the Caribbean and the migration of Caribbean people in the UK leading up to the Windrush scandal.
Pamphlets, political leaflets, calypsos, literature, poetry, badges and more explain how the nations moved from colonies to independent countries. The exhibition explores the work of activists, who took on the fight against racism in the UK and globally that underpins much of recent Caribbean history. New oral history recordings will allow those affected by the Windrush scandal, which first broke in the 1990s, to tell their stories.
