Event Details
This talk discusses the experiences of Black women in the English female estate based on research completed by Angela Charles in 2018 and 2019. It explores some of the systemic racism and disadvantage these women faced during their imprisonment and the how this systemic disadvantage played out.
The talk will also discuss the role of impression management and self-presentation for these women. In prison, impression management is used in many ways. It is used by Black women to alter their identity as Black women and the stereotypes attached to it, such as trouble, aggression and anger. Impression management is used not only as a tool but a coping strategy to deal with racism, micro-aggressions and it is a way of trying to meet the idealistic view of a woman which is a white middle class woman, and an ideal prisoner. This talk will detail some examples of impression management and the effects it has on Black women.
