Bloomsbury in the 1930s was a melting pot of human experience. The creativity of the Bloomsbury Set existed alongside thriving business, slum housing, and lively local politics. Then, in September 1939, Britain’s declaration of war with Germany brought forth a whole new set of challenges. The Blitz devastated the area, but amid the destruction the indomitable human spirit of its residents prevailed. While wealthier people escaped, many of those left behind were also fighting for a fairer, more equal life once the war was over.
The Bloomsbury Blitz will explore the borough’s wartime experience using a unique blend of songs, images and words from the time, from local residents themselves. It is written and performed by Bloomsbury Festival regulars The Good Companions, a local theatre group who use history and vintage songs to bring history alive.
