Event Details

Beginning at Conway Hall – the UK’s only surviving Ethical Society and its largest humanist research resource – join us to discover some of Bloomsbury’s non-religious radicals and reformers.

Uncover a history spanning from Victorian era ethical societies to contemporary humanist activism, introducing suffragists, pacifists, and international activists, as well as artists, scientists, celebrants, and reformers of all kinds.

This led walk draws on research carried out as part of the National Lottery Heritage Funded project ‘Humanist Heritage: Doers, Dreamers, Place Makers’ – a partnership between Humanists UK and Conway Hall. The project focuses explicitly on the human beings who made humanist history, and the communities they built based on shared beliefs, values, and causes. These people were both ordinary and extraordinary, and being ‘kind’ – compassionate, empathetic, public-spirited – was often the very heart of what animated them. Come along to follow in their footsteps, as we bring to life these human stories, often lost in a more intellectualised understanding of atheist and humanist history.
