Event Details
Come and enjoy a lively night of music, dance and costume with songs, music and ballads selected from the Dickensian era.
We invite you to enjoy the music, soak in the atmosphere, and, if you like to dance, you are invited to learn the dances, and transport yourself back into Bloomsbury’s history. You can also choose to come to the event in period costume.
The evening will be in three parts – a performance, dance lessons, and a music and a dance session for the audience to join in.
Drawing from archives associated with Charles Dickens and publications by his friend and collaborator John Oxenford, The Capability Consort will perform the songs and dances associated not only with the famous author but also with his literary characters, which acquired a life of their own. The 1850s reflected the consolidation of both a ‘Dickensian’ view of London and the world and a reworking of the ‘national story’ in the form of folk songs and Elizabethan music.
The audience will be invited to learn some of the dances and join in with one of the ballads from the era.
Come in costume and get a free (single use) drink voucher.
