Rugby School was founded in 1567 by Lawrence Sheriff, a Rugby born grocer and purveyor of spices to Queen Elizabeth I. On his death, Lawrence Sheriff left provision for the foundation of Rugby School in the form of an 8 acre pasture of land in Bloomsbury.
